Strategies for Choosing the Right Color Temperature

Created10/4/2021

Sunlight boosts our mood. That’s a well-known fact. While on gloomy days we’d rather stay home with our loved ones, on a summer afternoon we feel like rushing outside to see our friends. Few people realize, however, that lighting in the home can have the same effect. That’s why it’s important to give careful thought to your lighting choices. How can you do that? Two hormones are largely responsible for our energy levels. While serotonin puts a smile on our faces, melatonin makes us want to go to sleep. There are several ways to increase the levels of both. In fact, all you need to do is choose the right lighting for your home. Its color temperature will become a welcome ally.

Before we look at what kind of lighting to use in each room, we need to review the color temperature scale. This is measured in Kelvin (K). Light sources typically range from 2700K—which corresponds to the color of a classic incandescent bulb—and, in rare cases, from 2200K (candlelight) up to 6500K (cool white light). In the middle is the range of 4000–4500K, which corresponds to daylight.

Select by Room

As you probably suspect, it’s best to choose individual light bulbs based on the room. While cool light is welcome in certain parts of the house, warm, inviting colors are more suitable in the rest.

Bedroom

Relaxation, peace, and tranquility. These are the feelings we want to evoke in the bedroom. The main goal is to ensure rest and a peaceful night’s sleep. That’s why we tend to choose warmer light colors in the range of 2,700–3,000 K. Pleasant blue and neutral tones flood our brains with the melatonin we need.

Home Office

Here, it’s important to stay focused and be as productive as possible. Natural light is the ideal solution. At the same time, however, we mustn’t let the intensity get too high. The appropriate color temperature for the light is around 3,000–5,000 K.

Living Room

This multifunctional space requires a combination of several lights. However, we tend to choose warmer tones. When hanging out with friends or watching a movie, we want a more romantic atmosphere. To highlight the design elements in the room, a daylight-type light around 3,000K will suffice.

Kitchen and Bathroom

These two rooms are a bit different from the previous ones. Good visibility is essential in these spaces. In the kitchen, we need to be able to see what we’re doing and stay focused while cooking. In the bathroom, we need brighter light not only for our morning routine in front of the mirror, but also for safety reasons. A color temperature range of 3,000 to 5,000K is ideal.
