What Is a Filament Light Bulb?

Created10/6/2021
Light bulbs have undergone a minor evolution in recent years. We all aspire to light our homes more ecologically, at a lower cost, yet with brighter light—or even in different colors to suit our current mood. LED technology has succeeded in this regard and meets these strict requirements. However, it fell slightly short in terms of design—until the so-called filament bulbs appeared. What exactly are they?

The term “filament” originates from other fields and has only recently been adopted in the energy sector. Literally, it refers to a long filament that serves specific functions. An LED filament is typically a glass or sapphire strip several centimeters long, coated with a layer of phosphor. A large number of LED diodes are then mounted on it.

And how does the filament work?

It is precisely these diodes that offer all the advantages of LED technology. Energy efficiency, low power consumption, and a long service life are among them. The filament is powered by a very small current, which saves energy. And it is precisely because of this that all the electronic components can be housed within the bulb’s base. Only the filament is visible, giving it a very stylish look.

Design Without Limits

In the past, LED lights offered very limited design options. However, filaments have made it possible to create the same shapes as those found in traditional incandescent bulbs. And what’s more, there are no limits to the designs, and the range of available types continues to expand.
