What is a smart home?

Did I turn off the lights in the living room? Did I close the garage door? Did I lower the blinds in the bedroom? These are common questions that come to mind after we leave home. And the concept of a smart home is designed to free us from this daily dilemma. All we have to do is look at the screen of our smartphone or tablet, where we can see everything that matters. 

Every device in the home is connected to the network and ready to follow our commands. We issue these commands by voice, using the included remote control, or via a smart device. If we meet these basic requirements, we’re on the right track to creating a smart home.  

A unified network serves as the foundation. Individual devices are connected to it, and we configure their settings using a phone or tablet. The devices then respond automatically, efficiently, and according to our requirements. We can refer to such a network by the timeless term “Internet of Things” (IoT). 

One of the problems that causes headaches for all users is the interoperability of products from different manufacturers. Major brands have taken several significant steps in this regard in the past. The most notable of these was the development of ZigBee technology.
  

This creates a unified language for communication. Devices can thus find a common language and successfully exchange instructions with one another. Specifically, ZigBee 3.0 offers a solution for smart home control designed to keep costs to a minimum. 

Smart Home is one of the fastest-growing industries. From lighting to security features to indoor climate control, the range of products continues to expand. So one day, we may wake up to an alarm set based on our phone’s calendar, have the shower automatically heat up to our favorite temperature, and find our car waiting right outside the front door. Even today, for example, we can monitor the energy consumption of a specific outlet and find out whether our children are watching TV or doing their homework.
